Focusing
on Opportunities and Creativity
3
Ways to Optimize Your Business for the New Year
The holiday season is
now behind us, corporate budgets are refreshed and it is time for us
to focus on the adventures of the New Year! This year's New Year
Resolution can be about how you use your own time and energy. The
political rhetoric is high due to being an election year and the
media continues to offer mostly fear with a sprinkle of greed.
Perhaps this is due to the fact that nothing good is happening in our
world or perhaps it is what helps sell advertisements. With these two
major issues and the addition of FaceBook, texting and e-mails it is
easy to get distracted from your business and spend hours of time on
minor items instead of focusing on the major strategy pieces.
We need to
focus on the opportunities and stop wasting our time complaining
about items we cannot control. Let's use our energy on creative
solutions. Let's refresh our entrepreneurial spirits! We can achieve
this by:
- Work Harder
- "Never
put off till tomorrow what you can do today" Thomas
Jefferson
- You
may want to go ahead and work an extra hour or two a day
- Caution:
Be careful of burn-out; a strong work ethic is a good quality,
but if you burn yourself out you may not be adding value to
your customer, family or yourself!
- Work Smarter
- Think
about the way your business operates
- What
improvements can you make?
- Can
you try something new?
- Should
you be doing something different?
- Can
you say technology explosion! The amount of software available
to increase our efficiencies is amazing
- Caution:
Looking into software can be very time consuming and it reminds
me of the saying "technology is great, when it
works!"
- Work More Creatively
- We
get stuck in our day-to-day routine
- Same
wake up time
- Same
uniforms
- Same
rules and regulations
- Same
everything!
- How
can we think of new solutions if we do everything the same?
- Try
something new that will help your mind think differently
- Improv is a great way to
learn how to listen better, communicate more effectively and
think of new solutions quickly
- Writing is a good emotional
and mental release which allows you to see your thoughts,
rearrange your thoughts and build on your thoughts
- Art - almost any form of
art (painting, molding, sketching, etc.) will allow you to
unlock the creative juices you have been retaining.
- Art also allows you to
notice the little picture and big picture items (i.e. the
end painting, but the artist notices the little brush marks)
- Digest
new information
- Begin reading trade
journals and publication
- You can learn and
determine your industry's economic environment and solutions
industry leaders are implementing
- Begin reading books
- Perhaps a book on
leadership, operations or self-improvement
- Do not be afraid to read
something completely different or that you would normally
not read!
Creative
solutions are how our economy has dug out of every major economic
challenge. The ability to think freely and offer our own solutions
instead of depending on others to think for us will rejuvenate our
economy and businesses.
Sincerely,
Mark L.
Wyssbrod, CPA

Financial Ratio Of The Month
-
Advertising to Sales
Advertising to sales is a metric which show the
company's percentage of sale to advertising.
Advertising to Sales = Advertising / Sales
This
can be used to determine how effective your business's advertising
strategy is (are you spending money or getting a return on it!).
